A New Subtitle : MISS BOLLYWOOD For FEMINA MISS INDIA :: MORE POWER TO PAGEANT

THIS YEAR A NEW SUBTITLE CALLED AS MISS BOLLYWOOD WILL BE THERE

Bollywood Calling for Miss India 2010 Contestants

~ Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2010 announces association with the ace Bollywood film makers Madhur Bhandarkar and Vipul Shah ~

~ Anupam Kher and Shiamak Davar to lend their expertise ~

Mumbai, 19 January, 2010: Taking the four-and-a-half decade old legacy to newer heights, the mother of all beauty pageants - Pantaloons Femina Miss India – returns with greater zest and zeal this year!

The country’s most sought after beauty contest today announced a strategic collaboration with two of India’s ace directors Madhur Bhandarkar and Vipul Shah, at Mumbai. These directors will identify, mentor and launch two Miss India finale contestants in their respective upcoming film projects. And that’s not all - industry stalwarts Anupam Kher and Shiamak Davar will also be supporting the association by way of training and mentoring the contestants in acting and dance respectively.

This is the first time in the history of Femina Miss India, that an association of such scale is being worked on. Femina Miss India works as the perfect platform for aspiring young girls to showcase and get acknowledged for their talents, not only in the global fashion arena but also in Bollywood.

The brand Femina Miss India has evolved constantly with new initiatives being added each year to make it a more engaging and innovative platform for women. In the past two years, Miss India added the South and East regional pageants to ensure equal participation from these regions. This association with Bollywood is also a one of its kind exemplary effort to work in synergy with the film industry and provide the perfect launch platform for talented individuals. With the support of stalwarts and leading veterans from the film industry, Femina Miss India can work as the perfect platform for aspiring young girls to make their Bollywood dreams come true.

Madhur Bhandarkar and Vipul Shah will interact with the contestants of Femina Miss India during the training period (Mid March 2010 – End April 2010). From amongst these, they would audition and select one contestant each and launch the selected talent in one of their upcoming projects.

Anupam Kher, who spearheads ‘Actor Prepares’, one of India’s finest acting schools, shall be designing a specialized training module for contestants in nuances of acting. In fact, ‘Actor Prepares’ shall also award a scholarship for their Full Time Diploma Course in Acting – 3 months to any one of the deserving contestants.

Shiamak Davar, India’s guru of modern contemporary dance , along with his team at SDIPA will be conducting exclusive workshops where he will train the contestants in Bollywood dancing.

The credibility of this pageant lies in its experienced and noteworthy panel of experts, who this year will include the likes of Marc Robinson, the official Contestant Director and Fashion Director, Mickey Mehta, Dr. Jamuna Pai, Dr Purnima Mhatre, and Alisya Raut, Seema Hingrany, Sabina Merchant, Dr. Sandesh Mayekar and Prasad Bidappa.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sameer Soni, National Director, Femina Miss India said, “This year we have introduced a fresh concept of cinema to the entire property since most of our past contestants have received a red carpet entry in the film industry. With this new chapter added to the pageant, it would now provide a bigger opportunity and open up newer avenues for the participating contestants. We are happy to associate with filmmakers Vipul Shah and Madhur Bhandarkar in launching this initiative and express our gratitude to industry stalwarts Anupam Kher and Shiamak Davar who support us in this venture by imparting training to the contestants in acting and dance.”
The CEO of Pantaloons, Sanjeev Agarwal said, “A step into Bollywood now signals success for the new talent in the fashion industry. Pantaloons is proud of the new association which Pantaloons Femina Miss India is creating with established production houses in Bollywood, thus creating a definitive culmination to the journey of the contestant which starts with the entry to the pageant.”
Filmmaker Vipul Shah stated, “Today Indian cinema is becoming the dream that millions want to achieve. Young individuals from across the country come to Mumbai to achieve this dream but they don’t know how! Without proper preparation many talented candidates lose out on possible glory. Femina Miss India is a great platform for talented individuals to get noticed. By providing specialized and focused guidance to the potential Miss Indias, they will become a complete package not just for Indian cinema but also to represent the country more confidently on the global platform at a later stage.”
Commenting on the association, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar says, “This association will bring about a novel, focused yet entertaining element to the Miss India training process. We will ensure we create superb actresses in tandem with the Femina Miss India team. It is known fact that I love working with newcomers, new subjects for my films and I think that this innovative tie-up will give the film industry talented actresses to reckon with. I am looking for the right mix of talent and individuality and Femina Miss India is the perfect place to find such a person. “

Veteran actor, producer and acting mentor, Anupam Kher stated, "I am very happy that my school Actor Prepares will be a part of this initiative. Femina Miss India is a great platform for scouting talent especially since we have had great actresses from that background. Actor Prepares and I look forward to training the contestants in nuances of acting. Bollywood is an aspiration for many and it is fulfilling to be a part of making someone's dream come true"

Shiamak Davar, the guru of modern contemporary dance adds, “Since I have been present at the South and East Pageants respectively this season, I have observed great potential in the contestants who have been carefully handpicked. Dance is an essential part of basic co-ordination and it is essential that the mind, body and soul are in perfect sync. The film industry today is a competitive place and it is a privilege for these contestants to be trained in dance and acting and be prepared to take the challenge head on.”

Marc Robinson, Contestant Director & Fashion Director PFMI 2010, stated, “I’m extremely pleased to be associated with Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2010. This association with Bollywood has opened up an exciting avenue & we are excited about tapping talent & honing them to take the film industry by storm. We will endeavor to focus on potential talent who showcase an innate the aptitude and strive to create a niche for themselves, not only by their outstanding looks & a perfect body, but also their aspirations, talent & intellect.”

The Femina Miss India pageant has recognized and nurtured the hidden talent in Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai, Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra, Dia Mirza and many others to perfection, and they have brought international fame and recognition to our country by proving their mettle on the global platform. And with the combined efforts of these talented experts this year, the success graph is sure to scale newer heights!

Simran Kaur Mundi on what its takes to be a beauty pageant winner

The weather is perhaps the harshest it has ever been on a January afternoon. Despite the warmth inside the Pantaloons store in Zirakpur, a set of ladies, most in their early 20s can't wait to slip back into their fur-lined coats and jackets once the shutterbugs are done with the photo-shoot. It's a proud moment for this pack of six ladies which has been hand-picked by former Miss India Simran Kaur Mundi to compete in the regional rounds at this year's Pantaloons Miss India pageant. "The line-up of contestants this year was really good...a welcome change from last year," mentioned Mundi, looking ever so fresh dressed in nothing more than jeans, boots and a full-sleeved Tee. A day earlier, she "assessed" as many as 25 enthusiastic ladies who auditioned for a place in the regional rounds. "The first thing, more than even clothes or looks, that I notice is personality. The overall persona wins many brownie points from not just me but by any judge assessing a pageant participant," explained Simran who brought down the number to 15 before a final set of six on day two. "My advice to all looking to be the next Miss India is to observe...how models walk the ramp, how finalists groom themselves and above all, be yourself. It would be horrible to be pretentious," the former title winner and now full-time model listed her tips.

Among those who succeeded in making an impression and winning themselves an entry were Piyu Jagia, Akshita Agnihotri, Aprajita Sharma, Deepti Chauhan, Disha Sharan and Rupinder Kaur. These shortlisted contestants would now compete in the regional rounds in New Delhi and Mumbai on February 25 and March 1 respectively. Thereafter, the selected contestants will undergo a 'Residential Training' programme for a month in Mumbai, in March. This would be followed by the Miss India 2010 grand finale in April 2010 in Mumbai.

"Being selected at the first go is very encouraging as I have dreamt about the beauty pageant for as long as I can remember," spoke a visibly excited Piyu Jagia, a 22-year-old B.Tech student from Delhi. Also "thrilled" at having being chosen were two Patiala girls - Akshita Agnihotri and Rupinder Kaur. The sole contestant from Chandigarh was architecture student Aprajita Sharma. "It's been a cherished dream but I am hoping to turn it into a reality," quipped the tall girl. Interestingly, most of the aspirants are already into mainstream academics - from MBA to architecture to B.Tech..."But somewhere all girls dream of winning that elusive crown!" summed up Mundi who has herself bagged L'oreal's coveted brand endorsement. Way to go!

    REVISED TIMELINE

SUSHMITA SEN Talks about I AM SHE MISS INDIA UNIVERSE 2010
Fifteen years ago, Sushmita Sen charmed an entire nation with her intelligence and poise after she brought home India’s first Miss Universe crown.

The statuesque model-turned-actress is now all set to help groom young girls for the international pageant as host of its India preliminaries - 'I am She'.

Sen, who has earned a reputation for herself in the Indian media for being unconventional, spoke to Reuters about 'I am She', her adopted daughters 'Renee' and 'Alisah' and why she would like to adopt many more times.

Q: Why do you think India is not doing well at international pageants? What do you think is lacking in our beauty contest aspirants?

A: The reason you have had so many winners from South American countries, like Venezuela, Chile or even Brazil, is that they take this contest with the same seriousness that we take the Olympics.

It’s a competition for them, on a global platform. The whole country backs it. Even 'Miss Universe' must feel the pressure, because at a venue in the Bahamas, you can only hear Spanish because the whole of Venezuela has flown down for the event.

A lot of the nations that come for the event, big or small, who don’t take this so seriously, suffer because their girls never get a natural push that the other countries get, just for sheer involvement in the event.

But we are going to change that, because we know inherently that nobody can make as much noise as we can. We are the loudest. This should be the kind of victory that your country calls to congratulate you for.
Q: Your pageant is also associated with social causes. How important is celebrity status in the glamour industry?

A: When I was a kid in school if you showed me a social message on TV, it would bore me. But if it was integrated into a Santa Barbara, or a beauty pageant, I would be hooked. So for me glamour, sports are very important to be able to express the support for all the causes that one feels strongly for. And there are so many of them. So we have tied up with five NGO’s for five causes that we strongly believe in for the 2010 edition of the 'I am She' pageant.

Q: One of the NGO’s that you have chosen is 'Baalasha'. Tell us the reason behind the decision.

A: That is an obvious one. 'Baalasha' made my first experience of becoming a mother so painless, and at a time when I was only 24. At that time India didn’t allow single parents, especially actresses who were single, to adopt. Baalasha could have made my life really difficult, but instead they went out of their way and made it really easy for me. There are so many kids out there who just need to go home; they seriously need to go home.

I feel that I will adopt many more times, because I feel that whatever is my capacity, I must do.

Q: You have just adopted another baby girl, Alisah. Tell us about her.

A: She is adorable! She is so beautiful and Renee is almost like a mother to her. I was just waiting for the courts to make it legal for you to be able to adopt two girls, and the minute that happened, I jumped at the chance. She is three months old and I just want to ask everyone to pray for her.”

Q: What does it take to be a good businesswoman?

A: To be a good businesswoman, most importantly is that you have to be aware. You can do no good unless you are aware. Awareness is of many levels. Once you choose a process, you have to trust it; you have to trust the team you have chosen, because they are your biggest strength. I would say invest in your people. Oh, and always watch your costs!

LANGUAGE WON'T BE A BARRIER FOR MISS INDIA I AM SHE MISS INDIA
Actor looking at educated, intelligent girls to take part, says language won’t be a barrier

Fifteen years after being crowned the first Miss Universe from India, Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen has got franchise of the beauty pageant in the country. Sen recently unveiled her new brand, I AM, as well as its beauty pageant division, I AM She, which will hold the Miss India Universe pageant. And the winner of the pageant will represent India at the international Miss Universe contest.

So far, the winner and two runners-up of the Femina Miss India have been representing India at the Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Asia-Pacific events respectively. Now, its two winners will compete for the Miss World and Asia-Pacific crowns, while the winner of I AM She Miss India Universe will represent the country at the Miss Universe contest globally.

“Two months ago, Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, called and asked if I would like to own the rights to the Miss Universe franchise in India. I instantly agreed,” an elated Sen told a press conference. Sen, who was crowned Miss Universe in 1994, said that she wants to use this platform to change the attitude of people towards beauty queens. “I want my Miss India to be educated and intelligent. Language is no barrier and we will welcome contestants who speak any language,” she said.
Her franchise would also be collaborating with five NGOs each year, which would be represented by the five winners of the pageant. Each of the five winners will be given a target for a particular cause that they would need to complete by the end of the year.

The NGOs will change every year and those selected this year are: The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI), Ani Foundation, Cancer Patients Aid Association, The Research Society and the Bal Asha Trust. “I don’t want the winning of the crown to be the end of a journey, but the beginning of one that will bring about a big change to the society,” said Sen.

Another departure from the usual glamorous veneer usually applied to such events are the prizes: The winners of the pageant will, from this year on, receive scholarships to study at prestigious institutions around the world, such as the New York Film Institute (NYFI) and Marangoni Fashion Institute, Milan.

Entries for the contest will be accepted for a month beginning Saturday and the finale of the Miss India Universe will be held on February 27, 2010 in Udaipur.
