PFMI World 2010 Manasvi Mamgai is feeling nervous. Only a month is left for the Miss World pageant to begin and she is neck-deep in training sessions, "I am in a whirlpool right now. Literally," says Manasvi.

So how is the training session going on? “My routine is hectic, I get up at 6 and my day ends at midnight. I go for my gymming sessions, yoga, diction classes, and wardrobe fittings,” she says. And how is she feeling? “I am felling jittery and nervous. But I am happy this nervousness set in early; it's better to be nervous now and get over with it, so that it won’t be there at the pageant,” she adds.

The Miss World 2010 is being held in China this year. “I am learning Chinese especially for the pageant. I have to start packing, whenever I pick up my bags I am like OMG! It’s finally here,” says Manasvi.

Priyanka Chopra - quite a whip-wielding dictator in Brazil

Actress Priyanka Chopra is hardly a friendly host in Rio de Janeiro where the stunts for Colors' adventure reality show 'Fear Factor - Khatron Ke Khiladi' are being shot.

According to news filtering out of the beaches of Copacabana where the first batch of stunts were shot with 13 contestats, hostess Priyanka was not kidding when she said she would make the contestants hate her with her instructions.

According to at least two contestants, who spoke from the location, Priyanka has transformed into quite a whip-wielding dictator in Brazil. She makes the contestants work relentlessly and hardly provides them with a moment of breather to replenish their energy.

One of the exhausted contestants said, 'She carries not a whip, but a whistle which is as good as whip. The whistle is with her throughout from 7.30 in the morning till late evening when we pack up. And she uses the whistle to intimidate us like no other woman in our lives has ever intimidated us.'

In fact, the contestants are so fed up of the whistle that they plan to steal it and throw it into the ocean. But Priyanka is relentless in her adherence to the regime.

'Priyanka is determined to prove she can orchestrate the contestants' stunts as effectively as Akshay Kumar in the first two seasons of 'Fear Factor',' said a source from Rio.

'She is up at dawn and ready to play hard ball with the contestants by 7.30 every morning. The stunts start by 8.30 a.m., but not before a very close and careful briefing by the stunt director to make sure no one breaks any bones on location.'

Throughout these stunts Priyanka is detached, dispassionate and ruthlessly professional. She does not fraternise with any of the contestants, not even Dino Morea whom she knows well.

'The only time she loosens up is towards the evening when she seems more relaxed. Otherwise she is so professional, it's scary,' said the source.

Priyanka says she's doing her job exactly the way she is supposed to. 'We are not here for a picnic. It's a tough regimen,' she said.

Broken promises,bad winner,bad press and now stolen designs????Shamne on IAMSHE for these kinda acts......if copying a Marchesa for the national costume wasnt enuf,the gown on Usho is infact NOT an Elie Saab like we thought,its actually by a delhi based desgner,further on being questioned by a leading paper,the "designer" cum(he loves this word)stylist for Usho says its ok as long as its not a blatant copy,sumone pls go n explain to that poor creature that this cnat get more blatant,changing colour is not creativity or remaking the shoulder pad ina cheaper material aint creativity either,bitch gotta learn how to go........besides i cannot bliv he didnt kno dat marchesa n saab had these designs considering he's supposed to be in the fashion world.shame on all you..........Hates it!

Top model and former beauty queen Shamita Singha has another view. "After the management of the Miss India contest changed, the standard has dropped. The girls being selected don't even match the criteria of beauty queens, from the height to body type. That's why you don't even remember the names or the faces of the girls who've won in the past few years.

Diction expert Sabira Merchant, who had trained Mirza when she won the Miss Asia Pacific, explains, "World competition has increased unbelievably and we have to raise the bar with our contestants. We need the best talent to come forward fearlessly.

Ask Dutta whether beauty pageants are still efficient talent hunts and she says, "Beauty pageants are specific in their requirements. They look for girls who can represent India internationally while retaining their Indianness.

HOURS BEFORE SHE BOARDED THE FLIGHT TO LAS VEGAS TO REPRESENT INDIA IN THE MISS UNIVERSE 2010 PAGEANT, AN EXCITED USHOSHI SENGUPTA SPOKE TO T2 ON WHY LIFE FELT LIKE A DREAM

When we called her on Friday afternoon, Ushoshi Sengupta had just stepped out of Haji Ali in Mumbai. “I had gone to make a wish,” giggled the 5’ 7.5” winner of the Sushmita Sen pageant I Am She 2010. And to guess her wish is easy — to win the coveted Miss Universe 2010 crown in Las Vegas on August 23. “Hobey toh bolo?” she asks, a little anxious. The next moment she is her usual confident self. “I just have to!” announces the Bong beauty.

What exactly are you feeling?

Actually, there is no time to feel anything or get scared. I am busy with last-minute packing, going to temples and meeting people. But I am just very excited right now! I can’t wait to board my flight to New York. Right now, I am on the (Bandra-Worli) sea link. People say it is a very lucky place. I just went to Siddhivinayak and Haji Ali. My flight is at 12.45am. I’ll be going to New York and from there to Las Vegas. Ma’am (Sushmita Sen) will be joining me there either on August 13 or 14. The pageant is on August 23. If I win I get to stay back in New York for a year!

I can’t believe that all this is really happening and today is the day I board my flight! It feels like a dream. There are people to pack my bags, so many people praying. For the first time I have a feeling that people are going to sit and watch Miss Universe. I am carrying a lucky-charm bag and my favourite blue audition dress! I have been asked not to wear it as it has been abused quite a lot. (Laughs). But I told Ma’am that let me carry it. At least I can sleep in it the night before the finals! I also wanted to carry my Tilottama bag. It is lucky for me. Nayanika (Chatterjee, who groomed her for Sananda Tilottama) has told me not to fight with anybody.

What’s on the agenda there?

There is no training in Miss Universe. The contestants are trained from their countries. So till August 23, we will have different appearances and events. Videotaping, swimsuit round, national costume round… lots will happen. There is also something called the national gift auction. Basically, all the contestants carry a gift from their countries. I am carrying an Om made by Golecha Jewellers. It is made of uncut diamonds and is beautiful! When we were thinking about the national gift, our main motto was to take something that has initiated the whole world. And what better than an Om?Whatever money they collect will go for HIV and AIDS awareness.

Then there is the swimsuit round. The costumes will be given by the Miss Universe organisation. There is a personality round too. We have a one-on-one with the judges. I don’t know who the judges are, but I am hoping that Shobhaa De ends up being a judge. She is so lucky for me! She was there in Tilottama and she was there in I Am She. I don’t mind a Brad Pitt actually! This time strict instructions have been given to me that whatever I did with Shah Rukh (Khan) — she hugged him on stage — was okay because it was homeland, but not at this pageant…(Laughs). Whoever the judge is, I hope that he spells my name correctly.

Which designers will you don?

I made Ma’am and Dev and Nil meet because I wanted them to do something for me. They are doing my national costume. The piece that they have designed is stunning! Ma’am was like, “for a long time people have worn saris and ghagra cholis. So why not do something which has a national bird or something…”

Malini Ramani has given me some gowns, daywear, wrap-dresses, shoes, jewellery. Eina Ahluwalia has given me lots of jewellery… a lot of her funky stuff… net and silver jewellery, some nice silver rings from her new collection. It is such a wonderful feeling! So many people have called me from all over Calcutta asking me whether I wanted something… I am on top of the world.

My final gown is by Shantanu and Nikhil. It is an amazing piece. Ma’am wanted a gown for me in a particular shade (the colour of the ruling planet) that I cannot reveal right now. She went to Just Cavalli and Versace for that particular shade. It has been custom-made by Ma’am and them together. It is corseted till my waist and a little ball-gownish with a lot of diamente.

For the first time I am going to tie my hair. It is going to be a little puffed at the top with ringlets because Ma’am is very stubborn about my curls. She says the curls are yours and from a distance people should make out that Miss India is coming. Rajat Tangri has put together all the looks for me. He has given me some stunning evening dresses. For the personality round, he has given me these amazing organza business suits which are to die for. Anamika Khanna has done a lot of business jackets and suits for me for the interview round.

Sushmita Sen wanted a contemporary cut and also the theme of the national bird. The design had to incorporate the colours of the peacock. The sketches went through a couple of stages. Then we got the colour done.

It is a gown but inspired by the drape of a sari, which has a choli and a long flowing skirt. The base of the gown is Persian indigo blue and it is layered with gold shimmer offering a contrast. The colour of the gown is looking stunning with her skin tone. We did not use feathers at all. The feather effect has been replicated with organza lace. There is hand-embroidery and machine-embroidery with gold zardosi work. So when she does a namastey, the whole pekham will open up. We have used silk, organza, silk-satin and silk blend. We can proudly say nothing like this has been done before.

She will be wearing a single piece jewellery on one side of her hair with kundan earrings. There will also be a bracelet with it. No neckpieces. Very contemporary but also very royal.

2. What cause will you further in Miss Earth 2010

I would like to look at conservation of natural resources as my main thrust. I feel unless we look after our planet, we cannot leave a fitting legacy for future generations. I am working on a few projects and will share details of these from time to time.
3. What all preparations are you doing now for the Miss Earth Pageant?

As stated above I am working on a few projects . In addition I am enjoying reading and learning more about our wonderful home – planet Earth. The more I read the more I am amzed by the with and depth of life on earth and the magnitude of the resources that are our riches.we need to do more abt utilizing renewable energy, and I am seriously figuring out how best I can do something about it.

Its too far ahead to think about it at this stage. Right now my focus is on the Miss Earth Pageant. However if the conditions and the draw is right I would be open to considering I AM SHE at a appropriate time.

5.There are hundreds of beauty pageant aspirants visiting our portal, What is your advise to them ? What would be your success mantra?
I think todays beauty pageants in general and Miss India in particular need a combination of beauty and brains built on a foundation of purpose and commitment. Fitness, skin and hair are only a part of the main game. What is most important according to me is a ton of confidence, a load of Effective Communication Skills and Grace and Poise to wrap it all up. In short to win one has to be a total package of the points I have mentioned above.

6. What do you think is your biggest strength and your biggest weakness?

My biggest strength is my belief in my capabilities which is driven by my passion to be the best that I can be. My weakness is probably the impression that others have that I could win a contest. This makes other people look at me as a threat, which in turn makes me look like the “enemy”. I am working on how I can change the perception of felloe contestants.

7. Would you opt for surgeries to improve your physical features? Nowadays almost all pageant powerhouses like Venezuela , Puerto Rico do that and have been successful also , Whats your take in that ?
In principle I strongly believe that beauty comes from within and any alteration to our natural beauty is unnecessarily tampering with what the universe has kindly bestowed on us. When one has access to the latest techniques in natural body shaping and sculpting, there really is no need to opt for an easy (and sometimes risky) route like surgery.

8. After Miss India then what ? Bollywood?

Right now my focus is on Miss Earth and there is lots to be done. I firmly believe that what we have to get will come to us in its own time. So I will cross the Hollywood/ Bollywood bridge when I come to it.

9. Do you feel extra pressure now that you are the Hot favourite for Miss EARTH title knowing that Miss EARTH Is notorious for it's upset wins?
I really don’t take part in a contest worrying about whether the win is a natural progression or a logical choice, or a flash in the pan. I compete in order that I can test myself against the best in the field and my primary satisfaction comes from knowing that I have done my best and that I have moved myself to a new level of achievement. Therefore I am under no pressure and I am not one who frets over the results ….whether they are as predicted ….or even diametrically opposed. I look forward to the Miss Earth contest, and I will do my Best to be my Best.

10. What would you say to your die hard fans of Missosology ?

I have only the deepest gratitude and sincere appreciation for all the support that I have been getting from your enthusiasts and specialist. Thank you for being a constant source of encouragement and a great reservoir of motivation. I look forward to your continued support and unwavering faith.

Twenty-two-year-old Manasvi Mamgai is a true blend of beauty and brains.

The model, who was named Miss India World 2010 earlier this year, was in Dubai over the weekend to walk the ramp at a student fashion event.

Like other beauty pageant winners, for whom Bollywood seems a natural career choice, Mamgai hopes to make it in the movies but says she’d rather focus on the Miss World contest for the moment.

“I always wanted to become a Bollywood celebrity,” she told Emirates Business.

“I have also been offered commercial A-stream films, but movies are a long-term commitment and my current priority is Miss World, where I hope to do my country proud,” she said, speaking on the sidelines of Fashionova, an event organised by the fashion department of Manipal University to showcase collections by graduating students.

Mamgai will represent India at the Miss World 2010 contest in Vietnam later this year.

But her future plans in Bollywood are set. “I would initially like to do commercial films and then later move onto character-driven roles such as those in Madhur Bhandarkar’s films,” she said, citing the example of Fashion, the 2008 movie about the lives of people in the fashion industry.

Mamgai, now 22, achieved fame at a relatively young age, taking her first steps on the ramp at India Fashion Week in 2006, the same year that she won the Elite Model Look India contest.

Everything then fell easily into place for her, and she describes her career as a “cake walk”.

Despite that easy start, however, she has a word of caution for young women thinking about entering the modelling industry.

“Once you come into this field the path is very slippery, it is important to have your head on your shoulders and not get misled,” she said.

She has also had a few difficult moments.

“I remember once when I was walking the ramp, my shoes were very loose, suddenly my shoes went flying and fell onto the first row.

At times like these you just laugh and go ahead", she said.

Mamgai has a fabulous body that many girls dream of, so it’s a little difficult to believe she does not go the gym regularly.

“I rarely make it to the gym as I am traveling most of the time, I am like this because it is genetic, it is in my blood,” she said, smiling shyly.

Like any other girl her age who dreams of dating a celebrity, Mamgai is smitten by Johnny Depp, who has been named the Sexiest Man In The World.

“He is a good-looking person, talks well and is charismatic. Apart from the physical appearance, he is a good human being who has a variety of roles that are character-oriented, like the Riddler in Batman 3. If I go on a date with him I will have so many questions to ask him.”

“Call us the ‘Boola’ girls,” announced a chirpy Manasvi Mamgai (PFMI 2010 World) with Nicole Faria (PFMI 2010 Earth) and Neha Hinge (PFMI 2010 International) with a giggle adding that ‘Boola’ is the Fijian way to greet.

Back from a leisurely trip to the Fiji islands, the three beauty queens finally got some time to let their lustrous hair loose, far away from India, post their win in April this year.

Life’s been hectic since the pageant win and these girls made the most of their holiday abroad. “The adventure-filled prize vacation was certainly worth every minute. We went yachting, sky diving, indulged in the traditional Kava ceremony and made lifetime friends with the happy people of Fiji," said Manasvi who found Fijians’ warmth as their winning quality.

What took the girls completely by surprise is that many people on the streets there recognised them by name. “It was unbelievable when a lady addressed me as Nicole. They asked us how we liked their country and that they were impressed with the way we had answered our question-answer rounds during the Miss India pageant in Mumbai. You know, it was a feeling of home away from home for us.”

People there follow the Miss India contest, with just as much keenness as we do in India, thanks to the residents with mixed ethnicity of Indian origin there. And not just the natives, the entire country is just as beautiful, rich with its resources and serene beaches. And that’s what caught Neha Hinge’s curiosity. Said Neha, “We went yachting and the clear blue waters looked absolutely sapphire-like in the sunlight. I liked the jet boat river safari which took us to the interiors of Fiji. We drank the traditional Kawa, a drink made from a root. People sang songs for us and we joined them in beating the drums. It was just fabulous.”

DESTINATION: FIJI
Fiji, a country known for its rich flora and underwater beauty has much to offer to visitors and tourists. Apart from eco-friendly activities and water sports, skydiving is also a growing attraction in Fiji.

SKYDIVERS DAY OUT: Manasvi Mamgai, said that sky diving from 14,000 feet above the Fiji Islands was a sight to behold. “From up above, we saw the entire coral barrier around the islands. And then from the sky, we landed right on the private beach of the hotel we were staying in. Upon landing, the entire staff and guests were there to cheer us.” Neha added saying, “It was the scariest thing I’ve ever done in life. But now when I see the video, my family feels so proud of me.”

PLANTATION ISLAND RESORT: Luxury Yacht cruise to Plantation Island Resort on island of Malolo LaiLai, part of the Mamanuca group of islands at Fiji was another lovely day sport to go for.

SIGATOKA TREATS: The Sigatoka Sand Dunes is one of Fiji’s most magnificent physical attractions along the coral coast. The girls took the Sigatoka River Safari and Fiji jet boat adventure safari into the heartland of Fiji where one travels up the Sigatoka River to visit authentic Fijian villages and experience a day in the life of the real Fijians. “We participated in the Sevusevu traditional Kava ceremony and were amazed at their hospitality and relaxed way of life. We clicked pictures with chief of the tribe there too,” added Neha.

CUISINE: “Fijians use spices in their food, just the way we do. There are also many Indian restaurants there, so an Indian does not miss his home food much,” informed Manasvi. A popular method of cooking, which is still used today, is the ‘lovo’ which is an earth oven —a fire made on in a pit in the ground lined with heat-resistant stones. Modern Fijian cuisine is rather diverse with great influence from Indian cuisine and spices.

WEATHER: A bit humid like in Mumbai, weather is sunny during the day (in May-June) and cools off by the evening, said Manasvi.

The three winners also visited the Prime Minister of Fiji as a goodwill gesture. Back home in Mumbai now, the beauty queens are completely rejuvenated and preparing for their respective international pageants.

Miss India battle heats up

TOURISM Fiji's has scored a significant victory in its campaign to host Miss India 2011 - the bid already winning over an influential Indian entourage presently in the country as part of the promotion to bring the glamour event to Fiji.

Four days into their visit, the three reigning Indian beauty queens touring the tourism belt said they would strongly lobby Fiji's intention as they thought the country was well resourced to host such an event.

Winner of the coveted Miss India World Manasvi Mamgai was quick to point out that she was looking forward to a return trip.

"I definitely will be coming back - I have to crown the new Miss India," she remarked when asked whether she would ever consider returning to Fiji.

"Fiji is a great place and it is well resourced to host the event. I have been on so many excursions and had so much to see.

"One thing I can tell you is I have had so much fun. Fiji has a lot to offer and I myself will be taking back experiences that I have never had before. Tomorrow I go skydiving, something I have never before," the 22-year-old Delhi-born model said.

Miss India International Miss Neha Hinge, a software engineer by profession, was also impressed by what she had seen so far. "I will be supporting Fiji's bid because this country is truly an amazing place. It has a lot to offer and I have enjoyed the whole trip," the 22-year-old from Dewas in Madhya Pradesh said.

The well travelled Miss Earth Environment Nicole Faria said Fiji's bid gained ground the moment she met locals.

"You definitely can host Miss India and a successful one too. There is just so much to do and I just love the people. I have ravelled quite a bit and I can honestly tell you I have never experienced such warmth and genuine people. I was quite overwhelmed by the sincerity. It's a totally different and new for me and something I would like other people to experience," said the model from Bangalore.

Femina miss india winner are currently on their way to Fiji As Pantaloons Femina Miss India Earth 2010, Nicole Faria is naturally passionate about contributing to environment friendly causes. But while Nicole thinks that everyone can make an “impact on the environment”, it is the collective power of the nation that she calls on this World Environment Day to make a difference.
“Every single one of us can make a difference by making environmentfriendly choices in simple things like how we drive our cars or keep our homes,” she says. “It’s not very complex, just the simple things. Like walking short distances instead of using our cars which can help prevent pollution and make us fitter as well. Most of us switch on the AC in the car even if it’s a pleasant day, we roll down our windows when the AC is on — small things like that make a difference to the planet. Instead of using the lift, we can opt to walk down the stairs,” she suggests.
And Nicole exhorts everyone to “join hands” in bringing about these small lifestyle changes that can make a big difference. “We are a nation of 1.1 billion people. If even less than half of us start making enviro n m e n t f r i e n d ly choices, it’s going to make a huge difference to the planet,” she says.
Doing her own bit, Nicole has learnt to say ‘no’ to plastic. “I use reusable cloth bags. I’ve also spread the message in my neighbourhood in Bangalore about how we can save power by switching to CFL bulbs,” she says. But now, Nicole is looking forward to getting more people to champion the cause with her. She adds, “I always found it ridiculous when people would leave lights and gadgets on in a room. That just ends up in inflated water and electricity bills, and also hurts the larger picture. Now, I have the chance to influence people positively, and I hope I can.”

Fiji bids to host India fete

THE cream of India's beauty lands on our shores Sunday as part of Tourism Fiji's bid to host Miss India 2011.

The three winners of the Ms India Pageant 2010 will arrive on an Air Pacific flight from Hong Kong along with a supporting film crew.

They are 22-year-old Manasvi Mamgai, a well known Indian model from Delhi who took out the Miss India World title, software engineer Neha Hinge, 23, who was crowned Miss India International, and Nicole Faria, 20, the Bangalore beauty who won Miss India Earth.

The trip was offered to the trio as part of their prizes and the group was invited by Air Pacific, Tourism Fiji and Tours Managers.

Tourism Fiji chief executive officer Joe Tuamoto said the industry wanted to showcase Fiji's products and excursions have been arranged for them in the tourim belt.

"This is the first step in our bid to host Miss India 2011 which is a huge event. They go global and if we land it then it's a big fish," he said.
